Report: Arsenal set sights on £17m 'fighter', scored more than Nketiah and Lacazette combined in 21/22

Arsenal are in real need of signing a new striker ahead of next season.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left in January and Alexandre Lacazette has just rejoined Lyon.

Eddie Nketiah looks set to stay at Arsenal – he’s reportedly going to sign a new contract.

However, Mikel Arteta will obviously need more than just one senior striker at the Emirates.

Gabriel Jesus appears to be Arsenal’s top target up front, but the Gunners are being linked with other strikers.

Now, according to Tuttomercatoweb, Arsenal have joined the race to sign Giovanni Simeone.

The 26-year-old was on loan at Hellas Verona from Cagliari last season, and the northern Italian club is set to buy him.

TMW claims Verona will sign Simeone for around £8.5million and look to immediately sell him on for £17million.

As well as Arsenal, Juventus and suitors from Spain and Germany are reportedly eyeing the Argentina international too.

Simeone enjoyed an impressive 2020-21 campaign, registering 17 goals and six assists from 36 Serie A games.

His goal tally was more than Alexandre Lacazette (6) and Eddie Nketiah (10) combined last term.

Italy icon Luca Toni recently praised Simeone, even though he acknowledged his lack of “big-level” experience.

“He had an excellent season in Verona, where he scored 17 goals,” Toni told Tuttosport, via Il Bianconero.

“Giovanni has no experience at the big level, but he is a fighter.

“Even when he doesn’t score, he’s a player who fights for the team.”

Arsenal should prioritise other strikers over Simeone – TBR View

Admittedly, Simeone would be a bit of a gamble for Arsenal.

He has no Premier League experience and, while he had a good season last time out, he hasn’t been consistently prolific over his career.

Simeone also turns 27 in July, which means he wouldn’t have much resale value for Arsenal at the end of, let’s say a three-year contract.

Arsenal ideally need a striker they know will hit the ground running for them.

Someone like Jesus, a proven, experienced Premier League star, would fit the bill perfectly.

Or the alternative could be a younger player with resale value – someone like Gianluca Scamacca.
