Report: West Ham decided against move for Spurs target Sam Johnstone

West Ham United have decided against making a move for Sam Johnstone in an apparent boost to Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of signing the goalkeeper this summer, according to a report from The Times.

Johnstone is almost certainly going to leave West Brom when the window opens. His contract at the Hawthorns expires at the end of the season. And reports have claimed that he will not play for the Baggies again.

He has been linked with several Premier League sides. It did appear that he may end up moving to the London Stadium.

Reports in March claimed that insiders believed that Johnstone was edging closer to joining West Ham. However, it was then suggested earlier this month that Tottenham were growing increasingly confident of landing the ‘outstanding‘ England international.

And it would appear that West Ham are content with the idea of Johnstone heading elsewhere. The Times reports that Moyes decided against making a move for the 29-year-old.

He could instead look at signing Nick Pope should Alphonse Areola not stay beyond his loan spell.

West Ham stance on Sam Johnstone a boost for Tottenham

Tottenham may have become favourites for Johnstone, but he may have had reservations about joining Spurs. He is arriving at a time when Hugo Lloris remains a key player. And thus, he would have to bide his time before he potentially takes the number one spot.

The Times reports that West Ham, on the other hand, have no goalkeepers signed up for next season. So there is a chance that their targets could be offered the number one spot immediately.

And that may have opened the door for a late twist had they pursued Johnstone. But it seems that West Ham are not planning to rival Tottenham for the goalkeeper anyway.
