Report: West Ham battling Liverpool for 25-year-old free transfer

West Ham United are the latest Premier League side to be linked with a move for Denis Zakaria, with Calciomercato reporting that the Hammers are battling the likes of Liverpool and Juventus for the midfielder.

Zakaria looks to be one of the most highly sought-after players in Europe ahead of next summer. He is set to be out of contract at the end of the campaign. Previous reports suggested that he has informed Borussia Monchengladbach that he has no intention of signing a new contract.

That report claimed that his dream was to play in the Premier League. And it would appear that a number of sides are hoping to offer the Switzerland international that chance.

Calciomercato reports that the Reds want the 25-year-old. But it is also suggested that West Ham are amongst his admirers in England. Meanwhile, Juve and Roma also want the Bundesliga stalwart.

Zakaria has improved in recent years. He is a strong holding midfielder who tends to read the game extremely well. But he is also able to drive his side up the pitch.

Zakaria could be an inspired signing for West Ham with contract running down

Only three players in the Bundesliga average more dribbles per game than Zakaria, according to Whoscored. Meanwhile, he sits seventh for the best pass-completion rate in the top flight.

West Ham will set their sights on a new midfielder next summer. Mark Noble is set to retire, and fans are yet to see the best of loanee Alex Kral. And as things stand, it looks more than likely that the Hammers will be in Europe again next year.

Signing Zakaria on a free transfer would therefore, be a masterstroke. And with the likes of Liverpool and Juve keen, it would be a huge statement for David Moyes to bring him to the London Stadium.

But their rivals will not be taking West Ham lightly.
