According to Duncan Castles, Tottenham are interested in signing Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, who wants to leave.
What’s the story?
Well, speaking on The Transfer Window Podcast, Castles revealed that Spurs are keen to sign the 28-year-old.
Manchester United are said to be closing in on the 79-cap France international.
However, it now sounds as if Tottenham could attempt to hijack that deal, if Nuno Espírito Santo’s side firm up their interest.
Castles adds that Varane wants to leave the Santiago Bernabeu.
He also claimed that Real Madrid President Florentino Perez is in the process of selling him for €50m (£43m).
Varane to Tottenham would be signing of the summer

If Tottenham sign Varane, it would be the signing of the summer, by far.
The Real Madrid No.5 has incredibly won 19 trophies throughout his career, including the World Cup, and also the Champions League on four occasions.
In fact, he’s arguably the best centre-back in Europe alongside Virgil van Dijk, having played at the highest level for basically his entire career.

If Spurs somehow pulled this off, it would also fix a huge problem position.
Toby Alderweireld wants to leave. Even if he stayed, the centre-back department is quite weak – Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier are very error prone.
In that respect, Varane – or another top centre-back – would be a welcome addition.
