Journalist claims Spurs star 'wants to leave', doesn't think his preferred suitors can afford him
Spurs star Toby Alderweireld “wants to leave” the club, according to Alasdair Gold.
However, he doubts any clubs in Belgium or the Netherlands could afford the Tottenham defender’s transfer fee and wages.
The Athletic reported at the start of July that Alderweireld had informed Spurs of his intention to leave.
And Tottenham won’t stand in his way amid links with Royal Antwerp and clubs in Italy and Spain, added the publication.
Now, football.london‘s Spurs correspondent has reiterated claims Alderweireld wants a move.
However, Gold also feels the Belgium international may struggle to seal a move back to his home country or the Netherlands.
“Finances are tight across the game, other than for a few super rich clubs,” he wrote on football.london.
“And for Tottenham it’s about getting the agents of those players they want out to help drum up interest.
“Premier League players are wanted across the game but the problem that also comes with them is those wages and replicating them elsewhere.
“Take Toby Alderweireld for example.
“He wants to leave and preferably return to Belgium or the Netherlands, but who there can afford his wages and with a transfer fee as well.
“There are so many moving parts to any deal.”
Alderweireld, 32, has a contract with Spurs until the summer of 2023.
