Report: Tottenham want Fraser Forster when Southampton deal expires
Tottenham want Fraser Forster, with talkSPORT reporting that Antonio Conte’s men are weighing up a surprise move for the Southampton goalkeeper this summer.
Spurs may well have their eye out for a new goalkeeper at the end of the season. Pierluigi Gollini is currently on loan. However, the Italian is yet to make his Premier League debut for Tottenham.
Reports had claimed that they are set to sign Sam Johnstone when his West Brom contract expires this summer. But perhaps they could actually have their eye on another England international.
TalkSPORT reports that Forster has not been offered a contract at Southampton with his current deal expiring at the end of the season.
And with that, Tottenham are now considering a move for the 34-year-old.
Tottenham want Fraser Forster
Some Tottenham fans may be disappointed about the links with Forster. It has been some time since the Premier League has seen the best of him over a sustained period.
A loan spell at Celtic in the 2019/20 season threatened to get his career back on track. His performance in the League Cup final that year will live long in the memory. He was simply ‘unbelievable‘ that day at Hampden Park.
And he has made several appearances for Southampton upon his return, producing some ‘outstanding‘ performances.
So as a backup, he could be a decent signing for Tottenham. It would perhaps evoke memories of the deal to bring Joe Hart in during Jose Mourinho’s tenure.
The problem is that Spurs would then face replacing both goalkeepers at a similar time. Both are coming towards the end of their careers.
Forster is not the man to eventually succeed Lloris, like Johnstone would potentially be. So that needs to be factored into Spurs’ thinking.
