A surprise report from Calciomercatoweb has claimed that Tottenham Hotspur want Diego Simeone as Antonio Conte’s successor with the Italian apparently ready to leave Spurs at the end of the season.

Conte has had a fascinating year at Spurs. Certainly, there can be no doubt that he has taken the club forward during his 12 months in the dug-out.

But that does not tell the entire story. And that is why there is some speculation over his future at the club.

Tottenham want Diego Simeone

He is currently set to be out of contract next summer. Tottenham do have the option to extend those terms further. Meanwhile, reports from The Athletic have claimed that talks are underway over a much longer deal.

However, there are claims from Italy saying something very different.

Calciomercatoweb reports that Conte is planning to leave Spurs in the summer. And Tottenham are making plans by identifying the man they want as his successor.

According to Calciomercatoweb, Spurs want Simeone as Conte’s replacement.

It would not be a huge surprise to see Simeone depart Atletico Madrid at some stage in the next few years. He has now spent over a decade in the Spanish capital.

In that time, he has achieved ‘unbelievable‘ success. However, they are already eight points off Barcelona and nine behind Real Madrid after 12 league games this season. They also finished bottom of their Champions League group.

So perhaps an exit is on the cards at some point. A move to Tottenham next summer however, is surely unlikely at this stage.

Conte appears to have full backing at Spurs. Reports from The Athletic this week claimed that Daniel Levy tells people in private that the Italian is the best coach he has worked with.

It is imperative that they continue to move forward. And obviously, Conte is known for being a volatile character. So it is hard to know what the future holds.

But to suggest that his exit next summer is already expected seems bizarre. If Conte wanted to leave, you would imagine that he would be quite content to walk away much sooner.
