Report: Tottenham the only real contenders to sign 'incredible' £42.5m playmaker

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with Roma’s Nicolo Zaniolo over the past week or so.

Last week, Calciomercato.it reported that Spurs had made a cash-plus-player bid for the midfielder.

Then, Quotidiano Nazionale claimed Roma had rejected a £30million bid from Tottenham for Zaniolo.

As well as Tottenham, Juventus have apparently been eyeing the Italy international too.

However, Sport Mediaset – via Tuttojuve and Sport Witness – have now provided an interesting update.

Journalist Daniele Micele claims that Zaniolo seems to be ‘oriented towards staying’ at Roma this season.

Apparently, both his teammates and Jose Mourinho have asked him to continue at the club.

However, the reporter also pointed out that ‘the only team that can break the balance are Tottenham’.

Spurs seem to be the only club with ‘the financial means to reach the €50m (£42.5m) request’ made by the Serie A side.

Juve have reportedly been struggling to meet Roma’s demands, effectively making Spurs the only real contenders for Zaniolo.

“Can become a great”

The 23-year-old is a playmaker of the highest calibre, and he would be a superb acquisition for Tottenham.

Spurs have been linked with a number of creative No. 10s in recent weeks and Zaniolo is one of the best out there.

“He has an incredible natural physique for someone who is only 19 and also has great technical quality,” Roma icon Daniele De Rossi said in 2019.

“In my opinion, as perhaps with everyone now, he is already a very good player – and can become a great one.”

Previous reports have claimed that Conte dreams of using Zaniolo in the same team as Harry Kane.

And if the above is true, this could well see Tottenham edge closer to the Italian’s dream signing.

Tottenham have already enjoyed a superb transfer window, and Zaniolo would truly be the cherry on top.
