Report: Tottenham 'superstar' to be dropped for his nation's next World Cup game

Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero is reportedly in line to be dropped for Argentina’s World Cup meeting with Mexico on Saturday.

This is according to Argentine outlets Clarin and Ole (via Sport Witness), who cover Lionel Scaloni’s plans ahead of the Albiceleste’s next match.

The Spurs ace delivered a poor performance as his nation fell to a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in their Group C clash on Tuesday.

Apparently, there are still concerns about Romero’s fitness and the state of an ankle injury.

He came off midway through the clash with Saudi Arabia, and Argentina were monitoring him closely.

Now, Clarin has provided an update on the matter.

Apparently, ‘changes are on the way’ after a couple of days of ‘chewing on anger, swallowing poison, reflecting and analysing’ within the camp.

Romero will reportedly be one of the players to lose his place. Manchester United’s Lisandro Martinez is apparently set to replace the Tottenham man.

He showed a ‘notable lack of rhythm’ before being substituted off against Saudi Arabia.

In addition, there were already doubts about his fitness and the muscle strain he has been nursing.

Ole, meanwhile, claim that Scaloni will ‘kick things around a bit’ after the shock loss. He is looking at those who didn’t start for answers.

Apparently, first idea is to tweak the defence as that was one of the weakest points. And Romero is the ‘main figure’ in his thinking.

Scaloni reportedly feels the Spurs man failed to show the ‘aggressiveness that characterised him’ and helped him to be an international starter in the first place.

Ole also claim that Romero will make way for Martinez.

Romero is a player of the highest calibre. He has been described as Tottenham’s third ‘superstar‘ alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

However, he has been inconsistent for Spurs at times, and against Saudi Arabia, he really struggled.

It may well be that he is suffering from fatigue and carrying a knock. So in this case, obviously he won’t be at 100 percent.

But in that case, giving him a rest is certainly the right decision.
