Report: Tottenham staff regret not spotting Gavin Bazunu sooner

Some at Tottenham Hotspur regret the fact that they did not spot Gavin Bazunu sooner, with The Athletic suggesting that there is a belief that they could have had the potential to be a future successor for Hugo Lloris.

Lloris continues to shine in North London. He has been exceptional at times this season. And there are few signs that the Frenchman is in the final stages of his career at the very highest level.

However, he does turn 36 in December. And with that, Tottenham will have to consider how they are going to replace one of their most influential players sooner rather than later.

His understudy, Fraser Forster will be 35 by the end of the season. And he has previously had some mixed form at Southampton. So it would be a surprise if the club expect him to be the answer even in the short-term.

Understandably, it appears that the club’s recruitment staff are already keeping an eye on potential successors for Lloris. Reports previously suggested that they are very keen on Leeds star Illan Meslier.

But he is not the only young goalkeeper they are admirers of. The Athletic reports that some at Tottenham see Bazunu as someone who has the ability to possibly succeed Lloris.

But, given that he has just joined Southampton for £12 million, there is a sense of frustration that they did not spot him sooner.

Tottenham regret over Bazunu

Bazunu is not yet the finished article. Before this season, he had not played at a level higher than League One in this country.

However, he is clearly a very talented prospect. The 20-year-old already looks at home as number one for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side. And he has previously been lauded for his ‘brilliant‘ loan spells elsewhere.

Should his career develop on the trajectory many expect, Southampton will face a battle to keep him at St Mary’s before too long.

Perhaps Tottenham will be one of the sides who put themselves in the mix for his signature this time around.
