Tottenham Hotspur are increasingly confident of signing Sam Johnstone, but plan to initially use the England international as a backup for Hugo Lloris, according to a report from The Sun.

Johnstone is looking increasingly likely to leave West Brom this summer. His contract expires at the end of the season. And the Baggies are on the very periphery of the play-off race.

Reports this week claimed that Tottenham are now favourites to sign the 29-year-old. And it would now appear that Spurs have a plan in mind for Johnstone.

According to The Sun, Tottenham are increasingly confident of signing the goalkeeper at the end of the season.

They do believe that he has the potential to take the number one spot from Hugo Lloris. However, they initially see the former Manchester United man as an understudy for the captain.

Pierluigi Gollini meanwhile, is likely to return to Atalanta after struggling for chances in North London.

Tottenham signing Sam Johnstone on free could be brilliant piece of business

Johnstone may not be the most exciting signing for Tottenham fans this summer. He has not always found his best form while in the Championship with West Brom. And he is yet to really play for a side near the sharp end of the Premier League.

But on a free transfer, it could be a fantastic piece of business. Certainly, not many sides in the Premier League will boast a better understudy than Spurs.

He was ‘outstanding‘ while West Brom were last in the top-flight. And if he kicks on, he could well be a decent replacement for Lloris in the years to come.

If the move does not work out, Tottenham have not parted with a huge sum to bring him in anyway.
