Conte lauds Sessegnon and Doherty after Tottenham win at Leeds

Antonio Conte has told Tottenham Hotspur that their goal at the weekend involving Ryan Sessegnon setting up Matt Doherty was particularly satisfying for him as it was the first time that he had seen this connection between his full-backs during his tenure in North London.

Both Spurs and Leeds needed a big performance when they met at Elland Road on Saturday. The pair both suffered agonising defeats in midweek. And losing did not appear to be an option for either.

Leeds threatened to strike the first blow with Pascal Struijk going close very early on. However, it was Tottenham who broke the deadlock in superb fashion.

A lethal counter attack saw Sessegnon get away from Stuart Dallas and slide the ball across the box. But rather than find Harry Kane or Son Heung-min, it was Doherty who was there to find the back of the net with a composed finish.

Spurs went on to produce a brilliant win, putting four past the Whites. And in truth, they spent much of the second-half toying with their opponents.

But Conte went on to suggest that the opening goal was particularly pleasing for him given what he has tried to do during his time in charge of Tottenham.

“Matt and Ryan Sessegnon, finally, I’m seeing our work is going to take the result and to see improvement,” he said in his post-match interview.

“For example, the goal that we scored from the wing-back to the other wing-back is a mark of my football. And this is the first time after four months that I have seen this. It means that the work is working.”

Both Sessegnon and Doherty are breathing life into their Tottenham careers under Conte

Sessegnon and Doherty have both had frustrating times at Tottenham. And before Conte came in, they were two players the fans probably had reason to write off.

They still have things to prove. Some Tottenham fans may view the right wing-back position as a problem for Conte to address in the summer.

Meanwhile, Sergio Reguilón may still be first-choice when fully fit ahead of Sessegnon.

But there is absolutely no doubt that both Sessegnon and Doherty are benefitting greatly from having Conte at Tottenham.

And that goal on the weekend could be reflected upon as a real turning point for both men.
