Report: Tottenham make first move to sign £8.5m man who thinks he's the 'best' in his country
Tottenham have reportedly made the first move to sign the in-demand Dutch left-back, Owen Wijndal, according to Foot Mercato.
Spurs are one of the most active clubs in the market already and there doesn’t seem to be a day pass by without them being linked with another new name. Wijndal, then, is the very latest to get a mention. And Foot Mercato claims that Spurs are the first club to make a concrete move to sign Wijndal, who is believed to have an £8.5m release-clause in his AZ Alkmaar contract.
Wijndal, 22, has already won 11 caps for the Netherlands and is seen as one of the best in his position in the country.
Indeed, the full-back certainly doesn’t lack confidence either. He told Football Oranje previously how he regards himself as the very best in his position in Holland.
“I am the best left back in the Netherlands. That is my opinion and I think I should be able to say that,” Wijndal was quoted as saying.
Tottenham are known to be keen on strengthening their options at wing-back, both on the right and left. Djed Spence is thought to be their man target down the right, although reports of talks being advanced are said to be wide of the mark.
TBR’s View: Wijndal Could Signal The End Of Reguilon At Tottenham
It’s blatantly obvious that Conte wants more from his wing-backs this season and it’s no surprise to see different names being linked.
For Sergio Reguilon, this could be a problem. The Spaniard has already looked to have been usurped by Ryan Sessegnon at left wing-back, and the addition of another player like Wijndal would be another blow.
In terms of Wijndal himself, he appears to be a good player and you don’t play for the Netherlands under Van Gaal if you’re not a good player. His self-confidence will serve him well, too.
