Report: Tottenham aren't actually close to landing 'unbelievable' £20m man, despite claims deal is done
Tottenham Hotspur are yet to come to an agreement to sign Djed Spence this summer, despite suggestions a deal is close to being completed.
Reports had suggested that Spurs were close to landing Spence for around £20m. The Middlesbrough right-back has emerged as the main target at wing-back for Antonio Conte this summer.
However, contrary to numerous reports suggesting a deal is more or less done, Teesside Live have actually reported that there have been no concrete talks between Boro and Spurs. Indeed, they claim that there are no advanced discussions with any team at all when it comes to Spence.
Why Footballers Keep Running Down Their Contracts
Teesside Live’s report would suggest there is still some way to go, then. Of course, Tottenham might still end up landing Spence this week and there’s too much speculation doing the rounds to suggest he isn’t a player of interest to the North London club.
Spence is thought to be keen on signing for a team where he will be given regular first-team football. Should he sign for Tottenham, it’s expected that Emerson Royal will be moved aside to allow Spence to compete with Matt Doherty on the right.
TBR’s View: Djed Spence To Tottenham Should Still Happen
We see this a lot in the transfer window, don’t we? A club is linked with a player then an outlet suggests said deal is close and before we know it, nothing has happened for a few days and the deal is cast into doubt.
It’s an intriguing piece from Teesside Live to be fair to them. It pours scorn on the fact so many have considered this signed and sealed, when clearly, it’s not.
However, there is no smoke without fire and you’d still expect Tottenham to wrap up a deal for Spence. It might take that bit longer, but Spurs surely won’t be letting this one slip now.
