Tottenham Hotspur will now face a battle with Brentford if they hope to re-sign defender Dennis Cirkin, according to a report from The Sun.

Spurs are monitoring Cirkin just over a year after he left North London to join Sunderland. His permanent departure came as something of a surprise as he appeared to be moving ever so slightly closer to the periphery of the first-team fold.

But perhaps his move to the Stadium of Light will act as a sort of loan deal after all.

Recent reports from The Sun claimed that Spurs were keeping an eye on the ‘frightening‘ 20-year-old. They are keen to bring him back to the club, before potentially moving him on elsewhere for a profit.

But they are not his only Premier League admirers. In fact, The Sun is now suggesting that the Bees are tracking Cirkin as a potential replacement for Rico Henry should he leave.

Where should defender go?

Obviously the chance to return to Tottenham will likely appeal to Cirkin. He came through the ranks with the club. And clearly, it is an exciting time to be involved with Antonio Conte’s side right now.

But he may also have his reservations.

It sounds as though Tottenham may not be looking at keeping Cirkin for the long-term. And there is real depth at both centre-back and left-back right now.

Brentford meanwhile, would represent a good step in his career. Thomas Frank’s side have proved time and time again that they are shrewd operators in the market. And with that, they have built a really impressive squad.

And staying at Sunderland may be an option also. The Black Cats are a massive club in the Championship. And they will have their sights set on a Premier League return for as long as they are in the second tier.

So it will not be an easy call for Cirkin should the offers start coming in. But perhaps Tottenham may not be the best place for his development right now.
