Tottenham transfer: Journalist suggests blow Spurs in quest to sign Southampton man

Tottenham want to sign Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard this summer, although they have hit a stumbling block in their quest to land him.

According to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, Spurs want the Danish defender, but the Saints aren’t keen on doing business with their Premier League rivals again.

Tottenham raided Southampton for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg during the summer of 2020 and they’re not keen on losing another player to the North Londoners.

Vestergaard was impressive during Euro 2020. It proved to be an emotionally charged tournament for Denmark, but the centre-back shone. His team reached the semi-final where they were beaten by England.

New Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo will want to add his own players to the squad. He has been the man tasked with replacing Jose Mourinho on a full-time basis.

Defenders will have to be his priority too. Eric Dier was so bad during 2020/21 that he lost his England place. Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez were also found wanting.

As a result, central defensive options will be the order of the day. Vestergaard is valued at more than the £18 million the Saints paid for him in 2018.

He earns £60,000-a-week and might just prove to be a decent addition if Tottenham can tempt Southampton into doing business once again.

Tottenham will have European football on the table next season. It might only be the Europa Conference League but it’s more than Southampton can offer.

He will have got a taste for the big games during a great run for Denmark at Euro 2020. By playing regularly in Europe for Spurs, he will only enhance his chances of keeping his place on the international stage.

Southampton’s defiance is admirable. Ultimately, however, money talks. With that in mind, if Tottenham stump up the right amount of cash, the Saints could be powerless to prevent their centre-back from departing the club.
