7 clearances, 5 tackles: Tottenham simply have to sign Denmark star man
England defeated Denmark in the semi-final of Euro 2020 last night and for Tottenham fans, it was a good chance to take a look at Jannik Vestergaard.
The Danish centre-back has been linked with a move to Spurs this summer. Southampton’s main defensive rock will be out of contract this time next year.
Tottenham will be desperate to get some defenders in this summer. Eric Dier was short of form last season; whilst Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez also flattered to deceive.
Joe Rodon is one for the future but he can’t do it all on his lonesome and reinforcements will be sought at the back.
Vestergaard could be a viable option. He’s unlikely to cost a fortune, although the Saints do value him higher than the £18 million they paid for him three years ago.
Last night he showcased his talents against England. He was tasked with keeping Harry Kane stifled and he did a pretty decent job.
The 28-year-old won four aerials on the night, highlighting his prowess in the air. That isn’t where his talents end though. Who Scored show that he also made seven clearances and no fewer than five tackles.
Would Vestergaard fit in at Tottenham?
With Spurs only in the Europa Conference League next season they could be forced to shop for players in a different market.
The club will need to be shrewd and Vestergaard could be ideal. Tottenham have been soft defensively for some time and the Dane could help improve that.
At 28 he’s in the prime of his career and he could actually be the perfect man to bring the very best out of Rodon.
What have they said about Vestergaard?
Alan Shearer was impressed with the Saints defender last season. He named him in his Team of the Week following a win over Sheffield United, labelling him ‘outstanding’ during the game.
It seems as though Tottenham will be in the market for some players this summer. A defender will be at the top of that list and stealing Vestergaard from Southampton makes sense.
The £60,000-a-week star is a signing who could excite the fan base and on last night’s showing, they could be seriously blown away when he gets into his stride at Tottenham.
