Report: Tottenham are about to trade Erik Lamela for 'little Cruyff', deal close
Tottenham are set to complete a major summer signing, with Sevilla star Bryan Gil set to head to North London. Fabrizio Romano claims that Erik Lamela will head the other way, with Spurs also forking out £21 million for his services.
The 20-year-old operates on either flank and will certainly bring some versatility to the Tottenham team. With Lamela going the other way, he will end an eight-year stay in North London.
Gil looks like an exciting signing for Spurs. He is versatile, has bags of potential and has previously been labelled as the ‘Little Cruyff’ by Spanish outlet Marca.
It’ll be interesting to see where Nuno Espirito Santo decides to play him. He can also play as a number ten or in a deeper-lying midfield role.
In total, he’s only actually made 21 appearances for Sevilla, scoring two goals and claiming two assists for the La Liga outfit.
Lamela has largely struggled for consistency during his time at Tottenham. He will leave having played 257 times for the club, scoring 37 goals and claiming 47 assists.
Last season he scored a memorable goal against Arsenal. His cheeky rabona proved nothing more than a consolation strike as the Gunners beat their rivals 2-1.
On £80,000-a-week, Lamela is among the high earning Tottenham players and getting him off the wage bill makes perfect sense.
Future star: Spurs could be about to complete major coup
Back in March, Barcelona were linked with a move for the talented attacking midfielder. He hasn’t been deemed a priority though and they now look like missing out.
One thing Spurs do lack is squad depth and Nuno Espirito Santo will look to address that in the current transfer window.
Gil might be deemed as one for the future but it looks clear that he can have an immediate impact, at least from the bench on a matchday.
He is skilful, has two good feet and will provide Tottenham with a badly-needed creative spark in the final third.
Lamela will be no major loss and including him in a deal to land a player who is regarding as one of Europe’s top talents makes for a superb deal for Tottenham.
