Report: Tottenham always in Malinovskyi race as Marseille back away

Tottenham Hotspur remain in the race to sign Ruslan Malinovskyi, with Tuttomercatoweb reporting that Marseille have now backed away with Atalanta hoping to receive a fee for the 29-year-old.

Malinovskyi looks set to leave the Serie A side in one of the next two windows. His contract expires at the end of the season. And with that, clubs outside of Italy will be able to negotiate a pre-contract deal from next week.

He has been heavily linked with Spurs in recent months. In fact, Fabrizio Romano suggested that Malinovskyi wanted to join Antonio Conte’s squad during the summer transfer window.

It appears that Tottenham remain in the running for the attacking midfielder’s signature. Tuttomercatoweb claims Spurs are always in the race for Malinovskyi.

Marseille are also admirers. However, Tuttomercatoweb reports that the Ligue 1 side have backed away with Atalanta keen to sell him next month.

Marseille are prepared to spend on targets. However, they are looking to invest in younger players who may earn them a profit further down the line.

So it would appear that Tottenham have a clearer run to his signature.

Of course, it may make most sense financially to wait until the summer to bring him in. They can agree terms ahead of the end of the season and sign him on a free.

Atalanta reportedly want around £12 million for Malinovskyi in January. So Spurs now need to weigh up whether the additional cost will be worthwhile.

They need a boost this season with Conte’s side struggling to find their best form. And Malinovskyi has been described as an ‘extraordinary‘ talent.

Spurs are in a strong position to call the shots. They could even perhaps look to agree a pre-contract deal and then go to Atalanta once that is done and dusted. And from there, they may fancy their chances of getting him in January for an even cheaper price.
