Report: Top-flight club want 67-cap Newcastle player

Newcastle United may be offered the chance to offload Fabian Schar this month, with The Sun on Sunday (16/1; page 60) reporting that Bordeaux are keen on the centre-back.

Schar has been a stalwart of the Magpies’ side since Eddie Howe was appointed. The 30-year-old has started eight times in the Premier League since the change in the dug-out.

Newcastle however, have their eye on a host of centre-backs. They have been linked with names such as Gleison Bremer, Sven Botman, Nikola Milenkovic and Diego Carlos.

The Magpies are yet to bolster their options at the heart of the defence. But it would be no surprise if they managed to bring in at least one signing in that area before the deadline passed.

And perhaps that may tempt Newcastle to leave the door open for members of the current squad to move on. Schar is out of contract at St James’ Park at the end of the campaign.

And Bordeaux are interested in signing the Swiss, according to The Sun on Sunday. They are able to pursue a pre-contract deal. However, the Ligue 1 side would like Schar in their ranks in the second-half of the season as they battle to beat the drop.

Newcastle lose little by holding onto Fabian Schar for the remaining months of his contract despite Bordeaux interest

Like many of the Newcastle squad, Schar is a player with critics. It is little surprise that Newcastle want to improve their centre-back options so desperately.

However, selling him this month probably does the Magpies few favours. The fee they may receive from Bordeaux is unlikely to make a big difference to the budget Howe is working with.

And he is a good player to have in the ranks. He has previously produced some outstanding performances.

So selling him this month would probably be a gamble.
