Report: Newcastle see £25m bid rejected for 24-year-old
Newcastle United have seemingly made a first attempt to sign Gleison Bremer, with Italian outlet Corriere Granata reporting that they have had a £25 million bid for the centre-back rejected.
The Magpies are stepping through the gears in their bid to get new signings through the door. Of course, Kieran Trippier has already made his debut. And it appears that Chris Wood is likely to be the next signing.
It was reported this week that Bremer had emerged as a new target. The 24-year-old has been outstanding for Torino.
He tops the Serie A charts for interceptions, with 80, according to FB Ref. And he finds himself in a similar position for clearances. Meanwhile, only two players have managed a greater number of blocks.
It would appear that Newcastle have wasted little time weighing up whether to make a move. Corriere Granata reports that the Magpies have made a bid worth around £25 million.
The report notes that Il Toro have rejected the offer. They hope to agree a new contract with Bremer – his current terms expire in 2023 – and hold onto him until the summer.
Newcastle do not appear to be in strong position in Bremer chase
It remains to be seen if Newcastle return with a fresh offer. Certainly, they will be hoping that the centre-back does them a favour and suggests to Torino that he would like to join Eddie Howe’s side. He shares an agent with Trippier and Wood.
Whether he will have any interest is debatable. His stock is incredibly high right now. So joining a club initially battling to avoid relegation from the Premier League may not appeal.
Torino may be willing to provide assurances that he can leave in the summer to ensure that he signs a new contract. And Bremer will be aware that there is likely to be a lot more interest at the end of the season.
So Newcastle may need to pull something special out of the bag to get a deal across the line.
