Report: Top-flight club want £20m for Newcastle striker target
Newcastle United could have to part with £20 million to sign Stephy Mavididi, with the Daily Express reporting that the Magpies want to reunite the forward with his brother on Tyneside in this window.
It was reported earlier this month that Newcastle wanted Mavididi. And they were apparently planning to offer £15 million for the 23-year-old.
Mavididi has been extremely impressive with Montpellier this term. He has scored six goals and contributed three assists in 19 Ligue 1 games. The large majority of his appearances this season have seen the Englishman start out on the left.
Eddie Howe is looking to bring him to St James’ Park. The Daily Express notes that his brother is already on the books with the club’s academy.
The report suggests that his asking price is around £20 million.
Newcastle able to help Stephy Mavididi realise ‘ultimate goal’
Mavididi has shown that he is not afraid to make big moves in the past. He started on the books at Arsenal, before leaving for Juventus in 2018.
He left the Old Lady on loan one year later, moving to France with Dijon. Montpellier obviously felt that he was able to cut the mustard in Ligue 1, signing him from Juve in 2020.
He averages one goal every four games with his current side.
Newcastle will also hope that his aspirations to play for England work in their favour. He previously told the Guardian that his ‘ultimate goal’ was to represent the Three Lions.
Obviously, there have been players who have made Gareth Southgate’s squad while playing abroad. However, it is probably easier, rightly or wrongly, to catch the eye while playing in the Premier League.
Newcastle may well be tempted to meet Montpellier’s demands in the days ahead. They have shown that they are not afraid to part with significant sums in this window.
And based on previous reports, the two clubs are not too far apart in their respective valuations.
