Report: Newcastle now want 23-year-old who learned directly from Cristiano Ronaldo

Newcastle United are keen on signing former Arsenal and Juventus striker, Stephy Mavididi, according to a report from the Daily Mail today.

Mavididi, 23, is currently playing in France with Montpellier and according to the Mail, Newcastle could launch a £15m bid for the striker. This season, Mavididi has scored six times in 18 Ligue 1 appearances.

Newcastle signed Chris Wood in the week but are looking for even more attacking options. Their attentions are being turned to a number of different players, with Mavididi the latest name to emerge. The 23-year-old striker has spent time at Arsenal as a youngster, before getting a move to Juventus. His younger brother, Stephen, is currently with the Toon.

Mavididi never got going with the Gunners or Juve. But since then, he has improved and found his feet in Montpellier.

Why The 2021 African Cup of Nations Is So Controversial

Capable of playing up front or coming in from the left, Mavididi has admitted he used to spend time watching and learning from none other than Cristiano Ronaldo. He told the Guardian in a previous interview how it was a privilege to watch the Portuguese star.

“It was a privilege to even train with him. It’s helped me so much. It’s not even about going up to him and asking him questions. You just watch him and you learn.”

Newcastle, then, will hope to see some of that knowledge rub off, should the land Mavididi.

TBR’s View: Mavididi A Player Of Potential For Newcastle

While he’s not the finished article by any means, you don’t get moves to Arsenal and Juventus without having a bit about you. Mavididi could well be a good player for Newcastle, and he does have goals in him.

His pace and movement could make him the ideal foil playing off of Chris Wood. The former Burnley man is a seasoned Premier League striker. Getting players like Mavididi in and around him could be crucial.

And in fairness, at £15m, it’s pocket change to PIF and Newcastle now.
