Norwich City are eager to beat Newcastle United and Southampton to the loan transfer of Chelsea midfielder Billy Gilmour, according to the Daily Mail.

Daniel Farke is keen to add the Scotland international to his ranks at Carrow Road after guiding the Canaries back into the Premier League. And the German hopes to use his good relationship with Thomas Tuchel to smooth over talks.

Norwich won the Championship last season but have since sold Player of the Year Emiliano Buendia to Aston Villa. The Argentine scored 15 goals and offered 16 assists to help claim the title before moving to Villa Park for £33m.

Farke wants Gilmour to help ease the loss of Buendia, with Olivier Skipp also returning to Tottenham Hotspur after a season-long loan. The Norwich boss is unsure if the Spurs product will return but Gilmour has caught his eye.

Newcastle and Southampton are also monitoring Gilmour with a view to a loan deal for the Chelsea sensation. The Northern Echo cited Steve Bruce’s interest in the 20-year-old last month and that the Toon had registered their position.

Gilmour wants to leave Chelsea on loan this summer after rarely getting chances to feature under Tuchel last season. The midfielder did not feature in the Premier League under the German until the 34th game of the season.

Tuchel had started Gilmour twice in the FA Cup, but often left the Scottish gem out of his league squad. Frank Lampard was rarely more willing to field the four-cap maestro when in charge, either, with just six appearances last term.

TBR’s view: Newcastle should beat Norwich to Gilmour

Norwich hold an advantage over Newcastle in the race for Gilmour with Farke and Tuchel sharing a good relationship. But Bruce should strive to beat the Canaries to signing the Scotland international on loan this summer.

Gilmour has proven at Euro 2020 that the big occasion is not too big for him to thrive. Steve Clarke handed the youngster his Tartan Army debut in a friendly with the Netherlands last month and his first start against England last week.

Jose Mourinho hailed the ‘fantastic’ Gilmour on talkSPORT after Scotland drew at Wembley, claiming ‘he made the difference’. And added: ‘He was always moving, always showing he wanted the ball, he was turning under pressure.’

Clarke threw Gilmour in at the deep end, and he swam from the off, like Bruce would need at Newcastle. His touch, vision and desire for the ball was like he had played on the biggest stages for years and potential like that is rare to find.
