Report: Spurs target Phillips hopes to sign new Blackburn contract

There has been a twist in Tottenham Hotspur’s pursuit of Ashley Phillips, with Lancs Live reporting that the defender actually hopes to sign a new contract with Blackburn Rovers.

It seemed that Phillips was destined to become Spurs’ next signing. Reports on Wednesday claimed that Tottenham were closing in on a deal for the 17-year-old.

In fact, Fabio Paratici was set to attend Blackburn’s Championship clash with Reading tonight.

However, it seems that Tottenham are actually some way off a deal.

According to Lancs Live, Phillips is keen to stay at Ewood Park. And he could sign a new deal before the transfer window closes. And there is confidence that an agreement can be reached.

Interestingly, Lancs Live adds that the relationship between Tottenham and Blackburn is thought to be strained. That is following Dilan Markanday’s move to the latter in January.

And it seems that Tottenham may now be set for further disappointment.

Phillips hopes to sign new Blackburn contract

It is a surprise to see that reports saying Tottenham are close to a deal are wide of the mark. But you can also understand why Phillips is keen to stay put.

The teenager made his Championship debut at the weekend. And if he is not going to leave on loan, it appears that he is going to get opportunities to play for Jon Dahl Tomasson’s men this season.

It is a shame for Tottenham if they do miss out. Former Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray labelled him ‘phenomenal‘ last season. And it does appear that he has a very, very bright future ahead.

Having said that, given the wildly conflicting reports, it would hardly be a surprise if there were further twists to come before Phillips’ future was decided once and for all.
