Tottenham are reportedly still keen on defender Jannik Vestergaard from Premier League rivals Southampton, but there is a small catch.
According to The Athletic, Spurs still have the 28-year-old in the frame as a target this summer.
The Athletic named him as an option for the north London club earlier this month.
However, the fresh update is that the Southampton centre-back is viewed more as a replacement in the scenario that Toby Alderweireld leaves.
Alderweireld, 32, is still a Spurs-owned player, who was signed by former boss Mauricio Pochettino back in 2015.
However, The Athletic previously reported that the Belgian centre-half hopes to leave ahead of the new season. In addition, Spurs won’t stand in his way if an appropriate offer comes in.

Vestergaard a decent option for Tottenham, but price tag unclear
Southampton signed Vestegaard for £18million a few years ago from Borussia Monchengladbach, but it’s unclear on how much he would cost this summer if he were to leave St Mary’s.
The Denmark international is a colossus centre-back that is great with the ball at his feet, as well as dominant in the air with his 6ft 6in frame.
He looks good enough to make a step up and Spurs’ backline could do with a revamp.
However, it’s a tall order for someone to replace Alderweireld, who has been an incredible servant.
For now, Alderweireld remains a Spurs player.
