A report from the Daily Mirror (12/8; page 56) has claimed that Spurs are poised to complete a deal for Sporting midfielder Joao Palhinha.

Palhinha enjoyed an outstanding campaign for both club and country last season. He was part of the Sporting side that won the league title.

And he followed that up with some impressive displays for Portugal at Euro 2020.

The Daily Star reported this week that Spurs made a loan bid for the 26-year-old. However, that offer was rejected.

The report did note that Sporting wanted £34 million for Palhinha.

Interestingly however, it would appear that Tottenham have bounced back from seeing that offer turned down.

According to the Daily Mirror (12/8; page 56), they are poised to complete a cut-price move for Palhinha. It is noted that Nuno Espirito Santo wanted him during his time in charge of Wolves.

Joao Palhinha could be a very smart signing for Spurs if cut-price deal comes to fruition

Palhinha would potentially be a very good signing for Tottenham – particularly if they do indeed manage to complete a cut-price deal.

Spurs have a number of midfield players. And Nuno’s ranks look set to be bolstered with the return of Oliver Skipp from his brilliant loan spell.

Palhinha is an intriguing signing. He is a very disciplined holding midfielder.

But it does not appear to be an area that Nuno needs to prioritise strengthening.

So it is a surprise that reports are now claiming that a deal may be close.
