Report: Southampton lead Newcastle and Leeds in battle for Perraud
Southampton are leading Newcastle United and Leeds United in the race to sign Brest full-back Romain Perraud.
According to L’Equipe, the defender will be joining a Premier League outfit this summer.
It is being reported that the Saints are willing to invest more than €10m (£8.6m) in the ace. And a move for the Frenchman should be completed in the next few days.
Perraud extended his contract until 2025 back during the January transfer window.
Leeds and Southampton were credited with an interest in the 23-year-old back in January after his new deal.
Perraud has been labelled a ‘skilful‘ defender.
TBR View: Southampton, Newcastle and Leeds need a new left-back
After last season, all three top-flight clubs need a new left-back.
The Geordies signed Jamal Lewis last summer, however, the former Norwich City man has proven a flop so far.
The former Norwich City man completed just 77.1% of his passes and offered little to no threat in the final third. As a result of his performances, Matt Ritchie, a natural winger, had been filling in last season.
Meanwhile, Southampton have no left-back at all at this moment in time. Ryan Bertrand will leave the club at the end of his contract, meanwhile, Sam McQueen is out with a long-term injury.
In the absence of a natural left-sided option, Centre-half Jack Stephens was tasked with filling in at left-back. His performances left a lot to be desired and shows the need for a new left-back.
The need for a left-back is dire, especially after last season’s lowly 15th place finish.
Meanwhile, Ezgjan Alioski is the Whites’ only out-and-out left-back with reinforcements desperately needed.
Stuart Dallas did perform superbly when asked to fill-in, but, he figured more in other parts of the pitch.
Meanwhile, Perraud would be a shrewd acquisition for the trio. He performed brilliantly for Brest last year, scoring three times and registering seven assists in Ligue 1.
Southampton, Leeds and Newcastle clubs have a desperate need for a new left-back like Perraud. However, it seems the Saints’ is biggest of all with the outfit possessing no options this summer.
