Miguel Delaney has revealed in his Reading the Game newsletter that Newcastle United are facing the same problem as every other club interested in signing Real Sociedad star Alexander Isak.

The Magpies are in the market for a new striker. Callum Wilson and Chris Wood are Eddie Howe’s two main options up front after Joelinton was converted into a midfielder last season.

As good as Wilson and Wood are at what they do, Newcastle need someone much better if they want to reach the next level in the upcoming season.

Isak is definitely that kind of player, but the Toon will have to break the bank to have any chance of signing him this summer.

Newcastle told they will have to trigger Alexander Isak’s release clause to sign him

Multiple reports have revealed recently that Newcastle are interested in Isak, who has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League for over a year now.

The 22-year-old, branded as an ‘exceptional’ player, is very highly rated by people who’ve watched him play. He scored 10 goals for Sociedad last season and is arguably Los Txuri-Urdin’s most important player.

Delaney claims in his newsletter that Arsenal tried to sign him in January this year, but Sociedad made it clear that the only way to get him is by triggering his release clause. Newcastle have now apparently been told the same.

Isak’s release clause now, after he signed a new deal at Sociedad last year, stands at an eye-watering £76 million.

TBR View:

Newcastle United are a very wealthy club now following their takeover. However, it doesn’t make any sense for them to splash £76 million on someone like Isak.

Don’t get us wrong, the Swede is a phenomenal striker. He can hold the ball up brilliantly, is a threat inside the box and is fairly clinical when chances fall to his feet. The fact that he’s still only 22 means he’ll only get better in the coming years as well, which is why Sociedad are holding out for so much money.

However, £76 million in one shot for a player who scored just 10 goals last season seems a bit too steep considering that the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Richarlison and even Erling Haaland cost less than that fee.

Sociedad will reportedly not budge on their £76 million demand for Isak, which makes it very likely that he will stay in San Sebastián beyond the end of this summer window.
