Liverpool are interested in a move for Lautaro Martinez as Jurgen Klopp considers future replacements for Roberto Firmino, according to a report from Calciomercato.

Inter Milan stand between the Reds and a place in the Champions League quarter-finals. And ahead of that game, Klopp lauded a number of the Nerazzurri’s stars, including Martinez.

He labelled the Argentinian one of the most exciting strikers in the world.

And it would appear that his admiration of the 24-year-old has existed for some time. Calciomercato suggests that Martinez was on Liverpool’s radar ahead of their move for Diogo Jota.

Their interest has apparently not gone away. Calciomercato reports that Martinez remains on the Reds’ wishlist with Klopp keeping an eye on players who could replace Firmino further down the line.

Liverpool would be foolish not to consider Lautaro Martinez when key men need replacing

Martinez is certainly living up to Klopp’s claim of being one of the best in the world. He has scored 10 times in 15 appearances in Serie A, stepping up in the wake of Romelu Lukaku’s departure.

Of course, Liverpool may have feared that their chance of signing Martinez had gone during the summer. He was heavily linked with a move to the Premier League.

However, it was Tottenham and Arsenal seemingly leading the charge for his signature. In fact, it was claimed at one stage that Spurs had agreed a £60 million fee with Inter ahead of a potential deal.

Obviously, no move would take place. And Martinez has since signed a new contract.

But Firmino is unlikely to be going anywhere for the time-being. So much could change by the time Liverpool need to ramp up their interest.
