The Athletic have shared what sources have told them about Eddie Howe’s incredible work rate, behind the scenes at Newcastle United – already.

Howe, 43, took his first training session as Newcastle manager on Tuesday. Arriving with his team before 7AM, early impressions are very positive.

A video of Howe’s training session was posted on Newcastle’s YouTube channel. The Toon gaffer put the players, firstly, through a bleep test.

Then, he worked incessantly on tactics on the pitch, stopping drills now and then to tell players what he wanted from them. Assured, confident, precise.

At one point, he even tells the players that some are standing still – and that standing still is “no good”. That drew plenty of praise from fans on Twitter.

The Athletic’s Newcastle writer Chris Waugh now shared just how many hours Howe is putting in behind the scenes – labelled “inordinate”.

“Sources say he has already dedicated an “inordinate amount of hours and energy” into researching the squad, how to implement his survival plan.”

Some of the major criticisms of Steve Bruce’s tenure was his lack of coaching in training, no tactical nous, and a lack of idea or identity.

But already, Howe looks like he is changing the ethos on Tyneside. Clearly, he is incredibly hands on – even sprinting to receive a ball at one point.

His instructions, which were short but precise – informative yet not confusing – were clear. Creating space, working the ball quickly.

He put pressure on the Newcastle players who might have coasted by in training under Bruce. The tide is changing, on Tyneside.
