Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz is one of the two midfielders Roma would like to sign in January, with Calciomercato reporting that the Giallorossi plan to hold onto Amadou Diawara until then.

Diawara seemingly felt that he may be on his way out of the Spanish capital.

Calciomercato reports that Diawara had initially accepted a proposal from Galatasaray ahead of the final hours of the transfer window in Turkey.

However, the move has broken down. And it appears that the Guinea international is staying. For now.

According to Calciomercato, he is set to be made available once again in January.

And should they manage to offload the 24-year-old, Jose Mourinho’s men want either Denis Zakaria or Douglas Luiz.

Of course, Roma’s interest will come as no surprise to Villa supporters. The Serie A side were linked with the Brazilian in the summer.

It was claimed by Il Romanista that they wanted the 23-year-old after missing out on Granit Xhaka. Obviously, Xhaka has since signed a new contract at Arsenal.

Aston Villa unlikely to welcome fresh Roma interest in Douglas Luiz

Douglas Luiz has had a mixed time at Aston Villa. But he was absolutely outstanding for much of his second season with the club last year.

He has struggled to recapture that form. But he only turned 23 earlier this year. So he has a lot of time to improve and take his game to the next level.

Villa are surely unlikely to want to lose Luiz, particularly in a January window. Replacing him would be an incredibly difficult task.

But it does seem that Roma could decide to test their resolve.
