Arsenal transfer: Roma abandon Gunners raid, prefer Aston Villa star
Roma have abandoned plans to sign Granit Xhaka from Arsenal this summer, according to Il Romanista. Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz is now in Jose Mourinho’s sights.
Reports in recent weeks have suggested that Xhaka was set to sign for the Serie A outfit. He could now stay at Arsenal, however, with Edu sticking to his guns.
The Gunners want around £19 million for Xhaka. Roma have informed the Premier League club that they won’t budge on their original £13 million offer.
Their attempts to sign Villa star Luiz will be just as tricky. Dean Smith values him at £25 million and he’s been a mainstay in the team.
Xhaka departing would come as a surprise. He has proved a real Mikel Arteta favourite, making 45 appearances in all competitions last season.
He is currently at Euro 2020 where Switzerland have qualified for the last 16. A 3-1 win over Turkey on Sunday saw them progress as a best third place team.
Xhaka’s future now remains unclear. Arsenal could choose to keep the player who has two years left on his current contract.
He checked in from Borussia Monchengladbach in 2016 and has made 220 appearances for the Gunners, winning the FA Cup twice.
Roma may well bite the bullet with Xhaka and pay Arsenal’s asking price. It seems as though they could test the water with Aston Villa first over Luiz, however.
Could Arsenal keep Xhaka?
Last season the Switzerland star barely put a foot wrong. As a result, it would be no surprise to see him stay at the Emirates Stadium next season.
Since a public spat with supporters when Unai Emery was in charge, he’s really won over his critics.
Villa fans will be hoping that they do return for Xhaka. Midfielder Luiz is unlikely to be available and supporters will hope Roma don’t turn his head.
The saga surrounding Arsenal’s £100,000-a-week player looks like rumbling on for a little while longer yet.
