Report: 'Phenomenal' player's representatives want Arsenal or Tottenham to make offer
The talks between Philippe Coutinho and Aston Villa are continuing to progress, but Sport claims that his representatives are hoping that Arsenal and Tottenham make late offers for the Barcelona star.
Villa have seemingly moved into pole position to sign the 29-year-old. Sport suggests that Barca believe that everything is going well in discussions with Steven Gerrard’s side.
Should he make the move, Villa will pay half of Coutinho’s salary while he is on loan. And the deal could include an obligation to make the move permanent in the summer.
Coutinho wants to move somewhere where he is going to play. However, his people are seemingly hoping that Arsenal or Spurs decide to throw a late spanner in the works.
Sport claims that they want the Gunners or Tottenham to make a concrete offer. But the final decision will rest with the Brazilian.
Tottenham signing Coutinho ahead of Arsenal is perhaps a little more likely after cup defeat
No-one at Tottenham can now deny just how important the January transfer window is. Antonio Conte has made a brilliant start to life in North London. However, he received a painful reminder of just how much work lies ahead.
Spurs were completely outplayed in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final on Wednesday. And they were probably only a couple of players away from being at full-strength.
Signing Coutinho would be a gamble. There have to be doubts about how suitable he would be in Conte’s system. And Tottenham will be wary of panic-buying, particularly with Barcelona looking for a permanent sale in the summer.
His time at Barca has not worked out. However, he was amazing during his time in the Premier League. He was previously described by Roberto Firmino as a ‘phenomenal’ player and a ‘magician’.
And the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal will surely need to consider whether someone with Coutinho’s ability to change a game could make enough of an impact to justify a roll of the dice.
