Report: 'Outstanding' Newcastle United player set to return from injury far sooner than anyone expected

Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is set to return from injury much earlier than expected.

The report from the Nothern Echo suggests that Shelvey could return to action in the next few weeks.

It was originally thought that Shelvey may struggle to play again before the World Cup in November.

However, Shelvey’s making ‘good progress’ and has been stepping up his recovery quickly.

Previously labelled as ‘outstanding’ by former manager Steve Bruce, Howe gave Shelvey the captain’s armband towards the end of last season.

The 30-year-old missed the last few games of last season with calf problems.

A hamstring injury picked up in pre-season then required surgery and has kept Shelvey out for several months.

Shelvey to return from injury sooner than expected

It’s a big boost for Newcastle, who have missed a certain cutting edge in attack.

Newcastle’s new signings have made them much more solid in defence.

Brazilians Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton have formed a fantastic partnership in midfield, supported by Joe Willock.

However, between them they’ve only provided one assist and none of them have scored a goal this season.

Shelvey offers a new dynamic, and would be a valuable asset for Howe.

The deep lying playmaker would allow Newcastle’s Brazilians to sit further up the pitch and support the likes of Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak.

The fixtures will be coming thick and fast before the World Cup.

Howe will have to manage Shelvey’s minutes carefully, but will have plenty of opportunities to play him.

The emergence of youngster Elliot Andersonwho could be involved against Fulham – provides Howe with another option.

The 30-year-old has had his fair share of injury concerns over the past few seasons.

But Newcastle fans will be delighted that Shelvey is expected to return from injury sooner than first thought this time around.
