Report: 'Outstanding' Newcastle United player left shocked and frustrated after being left out by Eddie Howe this season

Newcastle United defender Sven Botman was left shocked and frustrated after being left out by Eddie Howe this season, according to the Athletic

The ‘outstanding’ Botman made the switch to St James’ Park this summer from French outfit LOSC Lille and looked set to walk straight into Howe’s side.

But the Dutch defender found himself amongst the substitutes during Newcastle’s opening day victory over Nottingham Forest.

The 22-year-old has gone on to start four games for the Magpies but was an unused substitute in the games against Liverpool and Bournemouth.

And the former Lille man has reportedly been shocked by Howe’s decision to ease him into Premier League action.

Botman shocked and frustrated

The Athletic reports that Botman was both surprised and frustrated after being left on the bench for the season opener against Forest

The centre-back respected Howe’s decision but was surprised at being left out of the two other games.

The omissions are what prompted Botman to withdraw from the Netherlands U21 squad as he looks to stake his claim for a starting place on Tyneside, notes the Athletic.

Botman actually turned down a move to Serie A champions AC Milan over the summer in favour of linking up with Howe in the Premier League.

The Dutch international finds himself behind Dan Burn in the pecking order at the moment but it seems that Howe is easing him into English football.

The former Lille man put in some impressive displays in Ligue 1 and at just 22, he has an incredibly high ceiling.

There’s no doubt that Botman will eventually become a regular starter for Newcastle and Howe is probably right to ease him into action.

The English boss has already admitted he’s a massive fan of the player, despite leaving him out of the side during the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth.

Botman will be hoping that he can make an impression on Howe during the international break ahead of the clash against Fulham on Saturday.
