‘Love him to bits’: Howe is already a massive fan of ‘outstanding’ Newcastle United player he dropped this weekend
Howe was asked about his decision to drop new Dutch defender Sven Botman.
Botman had started all-but-one of Newcastle’s league matches before his snub against Bournemouth.
However, Eddie Howe revealed just how big a fan he was of Botman after the match despite not using the 22-year-old.
“We managed their load in the week where we had three games, so (yesterday) was bringing Dan back.” Howe said.
“I just feel his leadership skills and his experience, we need that in our team at the moment.
“Sven is going to be an outstanding player and will play many, many games for this club.
“We love him to bits, but Dan just gets the nod at the moment.”
Howe already a big fan of Botman
Newcastle’s capture of Botman at the start of the transfer window signalled their summer intentions.
The 21-capped Dutchman is one of Europe’s most exciting young defenders, and his choice to join Newcastle says a lot about their ambition.
Howe’s decision to drop Botman for Burn isn’t the most surprising given the towering defender’s form this season.
Burn has previously highlighted just how hard he’ll work to get into any team, and that’s clearly been picked up by Howe.
Howe has a wealth of talent to pick in defence now, and has even shifted Burn to left-back to accommodate it all.
Given his early form, it’s no surprise Howe is already a big fan of Botman.
Despite his young age, he’s certainly a player for the present and the future at Newcastle.
Newcastle may not have been able to convert several good recent performances into wins.
But their defensively stability has been one of the highlights of the season under Howe.
