Report: Nobody at Newcastle actually believes PIF can sign 'world-class' player this month

Newcastle United have been linked with a number of big names since PIF took over the club and Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele is arguably the biggest.

The Frenchman, labelled as a ‘world-class’ talent by Xavi, has just six months left on his contract and his reluctance to extend his deal has caused big problems at the Camp Nou. Barca are not happy with how his agents have behaved over the last few months and they now want him gone.

The Catalans’ director of football, Mateu Alemany, released a public statement today, urging Dembele to leave Barcelona ‘immediately’. They want him out before the end of this window and Newcastle are one of the clubs who have been linked with him.

But, can the Magpies really attract such a big player to St James’ Park?

Nobody at Newcastle believes Ousmane Dembele will join them

The Athletic published an article today explaining Newcastle’s transfer strategy and have given an insight on all the players they have been linked with since the start of the window.

Dembele, who was cost Barcelona an eye-watering £96.8 million just four-and-a-half years ago (BBC), is now one step away from leaving the Camp Nou, and that has really excited a section of Newcastle’s supporters.

However, the report claims that nobody on Tyneside actually believes that they can get Dembele this month, or Real Madrid’s Eden Hazard for that matter, who is also said to be available if the right offer is made.

Newcastle may eventually be able to attract players of Dembele and Hazard’s calibre, but for now, they should be more realistic.

TBR View:

Dembele, who currently earns £287,000-a-week, was always just a dream signing for Newcastle United fans. Almost everybody knew that getting him would be next to impossible in this window, especially when they’re in a relegation battle.

However, some supporters had a small hope of seeing the World Cup winner wear the iconic black and white. That, sadly, is unlikely to happen, in this month’s transfer window at least.

It will be interesting to see if Newcastle will try to lure him in with a cheeky bid now that Barcelona are desperate to get rid of him. It is extremely unlikely to work, but if there are no other takers and if the Catalans really push him out, maybe, just maybe, it could happen.
