Report: Newcastle watch Matt O'Riley play for Celtic against RB Leipzig

Newcastle United’s head of recruitment Steve Nickson was in attendance for Celtic’s Champions League clash with RB Leipzig in the week, with The Sun on Sunday (16/10; page 65) reporting that he was there to watch Matt O’Riley.

The Hoops need two wins to stand a chance of not finishing bottom of their group. However, their return of one point from four games hardly tells the story of their campaign so far.

Celtic have had brilliant opportunities against all three of their rivals, including Real Madrid. But unfortunately, they have not been able to make the most of their chances and have been punished.

And Tuesday was no different. They were beaten 2-0 by RB Leipzig at Parkhead after Ange Postecoglou’s men came close to scoring on a number of occasions.

One of those opportunities fell to O’Riley, who hit the post from 20 yards out.

And that would have certainly caught the attention of Nickson. The Sun on Sunday (16/10; page 65) reports that the Newcastle head of recruitment was at the game to watch the Denmark under-21 international.

It is noted that Crystal Palace are also admirers of the youngster.

O’Riley has proved to be an inspired signing for Celtic. He is a ‘wonderful‘ talent who will surely net the Hoops a massive profit when the time potentially comes to sell him on.

Even when he has not been at his best, he has still looked a class act for the Bhoys. Like Bruno Guimaraes, he is capable of playing in a number of roles in the middle of the park.

Celtic will surely want to keep him for as long as possible. But joining Newcastle will appeal to a lot of players given the progress the Magpies have made under Eddie Howe.

It will be interesting to see whether Newcastle decide to make a move in one of the coming windows.
