Report: Newcastle want 24-year-old West Ham target; he'll cost £37.5m

Newcastle United are interested in signing Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina, but The Sun reports that the Serie A side want a fee of £37.5 million for the Serbian.

The Magpies have been linked with a host of centre-backs. Of course, Eddie Howe’s side now have two signings through the door. And it would appear that at least one central defender is next on their wishlist.

The Sun reports that Newcastle have seen a £35 million bid for Sven Botman knocked back. They are also monitoring Diego Carlos from Sevilla.

It was also reported this week that they had also had a bid rejected for Torino defender Gleison Bremer. And with that, they are now seemingly looking at one of the Brazilian’s Serie A rivals.

The Sun reports that they are battling West Ham for Milenkovic. However, I Viola will only sell the 24-year-old for a fee of £37.5 million.

It remains to be seen if either Premier League side decide to go close to Fiorentina’s demands for Milenkovic. It would certainly be a huge fee to pay for the former Partizan man.

Convincing Milenkovic to move to Tyneside would not be easy either. He is coming into his peak. And he will likely have reservations of joining Newcastle while they are struggling.

Newcastle making big-money bids for several names should only help Magpies convince players such as Milenkovic

Newcastle have already made a statement in the market. Signing Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood has already sent out a major message to their rivals in the battle to beat the drop.

But the bids for the likes of Botman and Bremer may also have an impact. It confirms that Newcastle are willing to push the boat out.

Some players may simply have no interest in making the move this month. But some are likely to see that intent as an encouraging sign.

And in truth, it may only take one or two marquee deals to leave Newcastle with the squad to get themselves right out of danger.
