Newcastle United have been told that they can sign Duván Zapata for just £15 million this summer, having wanted him in a £35 million deal in January, according to a report from the Sunday Mirror (10/7; page 76).

Zapata has come close to moving to the Premier League on a couple of occasions. The Sunday Mirror reports that West Ham thought they were set to sign the 31-year-old on loan during the previous window.

However, the Hammers were not the only side keen on a deal. Newcastle also looked at the Colombian. But they were told that a loan-to-buy deal would have cost £35 million.

It appears that Eddie Howe’s men remain interested in Zapata. And his asking price has been cut considerably.

According to the Sunday Mirror (10/7; page 76), Newcastle have been told that Zapata will cost £15 million. Interestingly, Atalanta meet the Magpies in a pre-season friendly later this month.

Newcastle told Zapata is available for £15 million

You can understand why Newcastle were reluctant to meet his asking price in January. At the time, their situation was precarious. And the signings they did make played a massive role in keeping the club in the Premier League.

Signing Zapata now however, must seem much more appealing. He is now 31 years of age. However, he has been a consistent goalscorer in Serie A for a number of years now.

In fact, he has reached double figures for league goals in each of the last six seasons. And former teammate Papu Gomez suggested that he is ‘like a train‘ when he is in full flight.

So paying £15 million seems a no-brainer for someone this summer.

Newcastle have not exactly flown out of the blocks in the market so far. So there must be some exciting deals to come.

Adding Zapata to their ranks could prove to be an incredibly piece of business.
