Report: Newcastle to rival Rangnick in battle to sign Dortmund player
Newcastle United are battling Manchester United and several other European clubs for the signature of Borussia Dortmund defender Dan-Axel Zagadou, according to a report from French outlet Foot Mercato.
Zagadou has started to get a few more minutes in Marco Rose’s side of late. He had initially missed the start of the season due to injury. But he has completed 90 minutes in two of their last three Bundesliga games.
Dortmund face a problem however. As noted by Foot Mercato, the Frenchman’s contract expires at the end of the campaign. He is in talks with his club about extending his terms.
But he is attracting interest. Foot Mercato claims that Manchester United have already opened talks with his agent about a move. Meanwhile, Newcastle are said to be amongst the sides also in the running.
Huge coup for Newcastle to lure Zagadou away from Borussia Dortmund ahead of Manchester United
Newcastle certainly need to bolster their defensive ranks this month. They are off to a positive start, with Kieran Trippier reportedly on the way, and a move for Lucas Digne apparently in the pipeline.
But they need reinforcements in the middle. Zagadou has, unfortunately, had a couple of lengthy injuries already. But his contract status surely makes a move worth the gamble.
As noted by Rose recently, he is a huge talent with an incredibly bright future ahead.
“He is physically strong, he has speed, a very, very good left foot,” he said, as reported by Foot Mercato. “So far, he has had a difficult period in Dortmund, because he was often injured. I think that if it evolves well, it can really help us and, I hope, have a great future.”
He is obviously a player who has a real physical presence, standing at 6ft 6ins tall. But he is very technically gifted. He reads the game extremely well and always looked composed on the ball.
So it would be a real coup for Newcastle to secure his signature.
