Newcastle United still expect Hugo Ekitike to join the club this summer, according to The Athletic, despite the deal proving to be a complicated one to complete.
The club’s pursuit of Ekitike has proved to be a turbulent one. Obviously, it was well-documented that they agreed a £25 million fee for the striker during the January transfer window.

Newcastle remain in the running. And it had seemed that a deal was, once again, incredibly close. Reports claimed that they had agreed a £40 million fee, with the Magpies set to pay just over £30 million initially.
Only the finer details are left to be finalised. But The Athletic has hinted that those details are proving to be a little troublesome.

Agent fees and add-ons are holding up the deal. However, it does appear that Newcastle remain confident of getting a move done.
The Athletic reports that Newcastle still expect Ekitike to join them in this window. So it would seem that they are still optimistic.
Newcastle expect Ekitike to join
Of course, Newcastle fans will be wary of getting carried away at this stage. A move in January probably seemed inevitable at one stage. And there have been suggestions that he does not want to go.
And thus, the Magpies will be desperate to ensure that they do not miss out again.
Ekitike has been described as a ‘very special‘ player. And he has been absolutely outstanding in Ligue 1 this past season.
Newcastle will hope that a resolution comes soon. The transfer window is just about to kick into life, with only a few teams doing deals thus far.
If they miss out on signing Ekitike, they have time to turn their attention elsewhere.
But it does seem that Newcastle remain hopeful that Ekitike is on his way – despite having hurdles still to clear.
