There’s yet another twist in Newcastle United’s pursuit of Stade Reims striker Hugo Ekitike, claims Goal France reporter Marc Mechenoua.

It has been a wild few months for Newcastle fans – both on and off the pitch. The long-awaited takeover was completed last year, Eddie Howe was appointed as the new manager and the Toon managed to finish 11th in the Premier League table in a season where they were destined to go down.

Their January transfer business is one of the biggest reasons why they survived. Howe brought five players and Ekitike was all set to become the sixth, but the young Frenchman turned down a move in the eleventh hour.

Newcastle had agreed a £25 million deal with Reims in January, and they’ve reportedly agreed an even bigger deal now. But, the problem remains the same – Ekitike does not want to move to Saint James’ Park.

Hugo Ekitike does not want to join Newcastle United

Just last week, reports from France revealed that Newcastle and Reims had struck an agreement to sign Ekitike. The fee was reported to be worth up to £40 million, and we really did feel like the transfer would go through this time.

Sadly for Magpies fans, the deal may collapse this time as well.

Goal France journalist Mechenoua claimed on the France Bleu podcast 100% PSG La Tribune: “I’ve seen that he’s being sent to Newcastle. That’s not true. He doesn’t want to go.

“What’s certain is that there isn’t an agreement between Ekitike and Newcastle.”

TBR View:

Ekitike is a fantastic young talent. He’s still only 19 and impressed everyone in his breakthrough campaign in the Ligue 1 last season.

Newcastle are absolutely right to go after a player as talented as Ekitike, but if it takes this much convincing to bring him in, is it really worth it?

The Magpies have been trying to sign the youngster for five months now. Even Ekitike’s own club are ready to send him to Tyneside, but if Mechenoua is to be believed and the youngster just has no interest in joining Newcastle, Howe should just end his pursuit and look elsewhere.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, but the longer this drags on, the worse it is for Newcastle.
