Newcastle United are set to offer Fabian Schar a new contract and it is well-deserved.

The Swiss international joined the Magpies from Deportivo La Coruna after his £3 million release clause was triggered in 2018 (BBC). He has played 90 times for the Toon in all competitions so far and he has had his ups and downs.

Schar’s contract was due to expire last summer but Newcastle extended his deal by another year. He has again entered the final six months of his deal but Eddie Howe really wants to keep him around.

If Steve Bruce was still at the helm, that wouldn’t have been the case.

Fabian Schar set for new Newcastle contract

The Athletic reveal today that the rumours surrounding a new contract for Schar are indeed true. They claim that it’s increasingly likely that he’ll be offered one soon and that is good news.

However, the report also claims that when Bruce was still at the helm, it looked like the Swiss international’s career was finished. The ex-Magpies boss didn’t fancy him and if he was still in charge, Schar would’ve had to find a new club.

Howe has completely changed things and Schar, 30 years old now, has played really well. He has looked solid at the back and he hasn’t really put a foot wrong with the ball at his feet in recent weeks either.

He looks comfortable in Howe’s system and it’s right that they’re trying to tie him down to a new deal.

Newcastle fans should be happy that Fabian Schar is about to get a new contract. His performances in recent weeks have been really good and he surely deserves a new deal.

The question now is what happens in the summer.

Newcastle will definitely try to sign a top-quality centre-half. The likes of Sven Botman and Nikola Milenkovic will all be in the news again and it will be interesting to see how that will affect the defenders that are already at the club.

Howe’s priority, however, is to keep Newcastle in the league. With Schar and everyone else’s help, he’s definitely on the right path and the Magpies look like they’ll survive this season.
