Micah Richards surprised by what he's heard about Joelinton at Newcastle
Micah Richards has told The Monday Night Club that he has found it particularly interesting seeing how the Newcastle United squad have been lauding Joelinton in recent times.
Joelinton had been looked at as something of a joke during his first two years on Tyneside. He arrived for a club-record £40 million fee back in 2019.
However, he only scored six Premier League goals across those first two campaigns. And it did seem that he was never going to come close to living up to expectations at St James’ Park, particularly as a striker.
But no-one is laughing at Joelinton now. Eddie Howe appears to have found the key to unlocking the Brazilian’s potential. And the 25-year-old has been absolutely outstanding for some time with the Magpies moving themselves away from the bottom three.
Kieran Trippier recently suggested that Joelinton was the player who had surprised him most in training. And he has been receiving plenty of other plaudits for a little while.
Richards suggested that he has been taken aback somewhat by seeing the praise that has come Joelinton’s way.
“Do you know what’s interesting? A couple of the players now, there was an interview after one of the games and someone said Joelinton is the best in training and then Trippier as well, he said on his Instagram story that Joelinton is one of the best in training,” he told The Monday Night Club.
“Up until the last three or four months you would never have thought that.
“It just shows you what they see on a day to day basis.”
Joelinton forcing way into long-term Newcastle plans with upturn in form
Newcastle fans may have earmarked Joelinton as one of the first players to be moved on following the club’s takeover earlier this season.
It appeared that he had little chance of being any sort of success at St James’ Park.
But everything has now changed. Joelinton is now one of the players who could help lead Newcastle into this next era based on his current form.
It says a lot for someone like Trippier to praise him so highly. Trippier has been a game-changing signing for the club. And yet, Joelinton is the player who stuck out to him.
It is truly remarkable how much of a turnaround Joelinton appears to have enjoyed. And with that, there is likely to be plenty more to come from the midfielder.
