Report: Newcastle plan to step up move for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer

English Premier League club Newcastle United are reportedly lining up an imminent move for Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer.

According to the Daily Record, the 23-year-old Hoops star could be on his way out of the Scottish club before Eddie Howe is set to be named as the new Celtic manager within the next week.

It is explained Newcastle want to pip Norwich City to the centre-back’s signature, and believe an £8million deal could be enough to land the defender target.

However, the report states Celtic want around double that fee, albeit the Scottish giants may need to cash in on the £16million-rated defender with his contract about to enter its final year.

Additionally, Ajer is believed to be weighing up his new move, but is still undecided on his future.

For Celtic, they should be happy if they can receive an eight-figure sum in the transfer market for Ajer.

The 6ft 6in colossus is a ball-playing centre-half that has been a great player for the Bhoys during a five-year spell. As he’s shown on many occasions, on his day he can be extremely solid defender at the back that is composed and authoritative with the work he does.

Meanwhile, Steve Bruce’s Newcastle need a couple of extra additions to the squad at St James’ Park to see them try compete in the top half of the Premier League table after a 12th-placed finish.
