Report: Newcastle on pole position to sign Timo Werner from Chelsea
Newcastle United are on pole position to sign Timo Werner if Chelsea decide to let the Germany international leave the club this summer, according to a report from I News.
The Magpies are continuing their push to sign a new attacking player. Reports have claimed that they have already made a £40 million bid for James Maddison.
And it was also reported at the weekend that they are also in talks to sign Timo Werner. Newcastle want the 26-year-old on loan and are hopeful that a deal could be possible.
There are problems. Werner earns £270,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge. And the Magpies are not prepared to cover all of his wages should he move to Tyneside.
But it seems that Eddie Howe’s side remain in a strong position in the race. In fact, I News reports that Newcastle are leading the charge for Werner’s signature.
The report reiterates that Newcastle are ready to pay a portion of his wages. They will also pay a loan fee. But Chelsea are delaying a decision on Werner’s future until they have a better idea of who they are bringing in.
Newcastle on pole position to sign Werner
Newcastle signing Werner on loan would certainly have the potential to be a masterstroke from the Magpies. Werner has not had the best time at Chelsea. But there is clearly a very talented player there.
He was prolific with RB Leipzig. And he has been ‘brilliant‘ in certain moments for the Blues following his £45 million move.
A loan move may take some of the pressure away from Werner. He has also been written off by many. So that may bring an element of freedom if he gets the chance to move on.
