Report: Newcastle in talks to sign Arsenal target Timo Werner on loan
Newcastle United believe that they could strike a deal for Timo Werner, with the Daily Mirror reporting that they are now in talks to sign the Chelsea striker on loan this summer.
The Magpies are certainly stepping up their push to sign a new attacking player in this window. Reports claimed that they have made a £40 million bid for James Maddison.
And it seems that they are very interested in bringing Werner to St James’ Park.
The Daily Mirror reports that they are now in talks over a loan deal for the 26-year-old. And his desire to be a success in the Premier League has given them hope that a move may be possible.
There are hurdles to clear, however. The Daily Mirror notes that Werner earns £270,000-a-week at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle are not looking to pay that amount. So they will either need the forward to take a pay-cut or get Chelsea to cover some of his wages.
Chelsea also want a clause inserted that sees the move become permanent next summer.
Meanwhile, reports this week claimed that Arsenal are also keen on a surprise move for the Germany international.
Newcastle now in talks to sign Timo Werner
It is easy to forget just how highly-rated Werner was before he arrived in England. He had an unbelievable record for RB Leipzig. And his form prompted Chelsea to spend £45 million to sign him.
Unfortunately, his Stamford Bridge career has never taken off. He has only scored 10 goals in 56 Premier League games.
He clearly has the potential to be a ‘brilliant‘ player. But Newcastle would be taking a gamble agreeing a deal that would lead to a permanent move.
It could prove to be inspired. But it would also have the potential to be a terrible mistake from the Magpies.
