Report: Newcastle now want to sign Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo
The 23-year-old Italian, branded as ‘incredible’, has been one of the Giallorossi’s prized assets since he joined them in 2018. He is a magnificent player when he’s fit, and it’s only a matter of time before he leaves Roma for a bigger club.
Could Newcastle United beat Spurs to his signature?
Newcastle now want to sign Tottenham target Nicolo Zaniolo
Eddie Howe’s Newcastle have been incredible this season.
They are currently third in the Premier League table, just two points behind defending champions Manchester City, and they’re dreaming of qualifying for the Champions League now.
The Magpies have already shown they can lure in big players ahead of other top clubs – Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak are two brilliant examples. Roma’s Zaniolo is reportedly the next one on their list.
Italian outlet Roma Today claim that contract talks between the 23-year-old and Jose Mourinho’s side are not progressing at all. The Giallorossi are yet to meet his salary demands and that opens the door for an exit.
Zaniolo will enter the final 18 months of his contract tomorrow, and the report claims that along with Tottenham and Arsenal, Newcastle are really keen to sign him.
Howe’s side are reportedly ready to invest an ‘important figure’ on the Italian to lure him away from Roma in 2023.
He had his bags packed to join Tottenham
As they have been for a few years now, Tottenham were heavily linked with a move to sign Zaniolo in last summer’s transfer window.
Corriere Dello Sport even revealed that Spurs and Roma reached an agreement for the transfer of the Italian on an initial loan deal with a clause that would obligate Antonio Conte’s side to sign him permanently at the end of the loan spell.
Zaniolo apparently had his ‘suitcases ready’ and was on the verge of flying out to England to complete his move to Tottenham. However, Spurs’ old boss put a stop to that. The report revealed that Mourinho personally convinced Zaniolo to snub Spurs and stay at Roma instead. The Italian obliged.
With Newcastle and Arsenal also said to be keen now, it will be interesting to see if Spurs will get another opportunity to sign him in 2023.
